The dollar and offshore Chinese yuan are rising after the United States and China agreed to resume negotiations, while the Japanese yen and the Swiss franc suffered large losses as investors drain safe assets. The results of the meeting between US President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the G20 summit were more positive than investors had expected. Trump promised to hold the introduction of new tariffs, and China will buy more agricultural products from the United States. Also, the US Department of Commerce will study the question of excluding Huawei from the list of firms that are prohibited from buying technology and components from American companies. World stocks jumped, and investors dump safe haven assets.
China's offshore yuan grew by more than 0.5% to 6.8165 yuan per dollar. The dollar, which has been falling in recent weeks amid rising expectations of lower interest rates by the Fed, rose 0.4% against a basket of currencies, to 96.601 points. In relation to that, the euro also rose by 0.4%, to 1.1328 euros. The negotiations between Trump and Xi turned out to be much more productive than most investors had expected. The Japanese yen, which investors typically use as a refuge, lost 0.6%, dropping to 108.53 yen per dollar. The Swiss franc lost 0.4% against the euro and 0.8% against the dollar. The Australian dollar, sensitive to the economic condition of China, the country's largest trading partner, fell 0.4% to $ 0.6993, as weaker than expected.
What should I look for this week? First of all, you need to wait for the publication of important economic data from the US, including data on non-farm employment (Friday) and non-production activity (Wednesday), this should help better assess the likelihood of Fed rate cuts at the end of this month. "Some officials recently adhere to the idea of loosening monetary policy, and this data will help the market get a clearer picture of whether the Fed is ready to lower interest rates this month," said Koji Fukaya, director of FPG Securities.
