La Banque de réserve de l'Inde (RBI) a inopinément réduit le taux directeur de 6,5% à 6,25% par an. La décision de la Banque centrale n'a pas coïncidé avec les prévisions des analystes: seuls 11 experts sur 43 ont suggéré une réduction des taux. Le nouveau chef du régulateur indien Shaktikanta Das, pour qui cette réunion était la première, a été l'un des premiers à soutenir la politique monétaire assouplie.

Cette décision a été facilitée par le ralentissement de l'inflation dans le pays: en décembre, le taux de croissance des prix à la consommation a atteint 2,2% en termes annuels. Cependant, l'objectif d'inflation en RBI est de 4%. La baisse des prix des denrées alimentaires a joué un rôle clé dans l'affaiblissement de l'inflation.

Selon les prévisions de la Banque centrale, le PIB de l'Inde augmentera de 7,4% au cours du présent exercice clos au mois de mars 2019.
