The rise in prices for the precious metal occurred against the backdrop of a reduction in open positions and trading volumes. According to experts, the current situation indicates that the prolonged rebound of gold may exhaust itself in the near future.

The CME Group estimates that open positions on the futures markets for precious metals have been declining for the third session in a row. As for the trading volumes in gold, they have decreased by approximately 53.5 thousand contracts, nullifying the previous growth in Gold.

The last time such dynamics were recorded was in May 2022. This was followed by five months of gold decline before it reversed to growth.

The estimates of experts suggest that in the last two days, precious metals have managed to fully compensate for the corrective decline at the end of last week. It should be reminded that gold reacted to Jerome Powell's speech, the head of the Federal Reserve, in this way. During his speech in Jackson Hole, the chairman of the American regulator confirmed the readiness for further rate hikes if necessary.

The corrective pullback of the yellow metal fits into the Fibonacci correction model, underline the experts. However, the precious metal lost its growth momentum near the 61.8% level. Confidence in further decline of gold will strengthen when its price returns below the 200-day moving average, which is currently near the $1910 mark. A return to a low level is possible when the local minimum of August ($1885 per ounce) is reached. In this scenario, the yellow metal may head towards the ultimate low of $1820.
